Around Campus
Waccamaw Academy has much to offer its students, programs and events that correlate with and go beyond academics...
Our National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS).
Mrs. Robin Tomlinson sponsors two clubs, the Key Club of Waccamaw Academy and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes uses the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America, focusing on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.
The Academy also offers the Teacher Cadet Program, considered an introduction or orientation to the teaching profession. Its main purpose is to encourage students who possess a high level of academic achievement and the personality traits found in good teachers to consider teaching as a career. An important secondary goal of the program is to provide these talented future community leaders with insights about schools.
Mrs. Ginger Bass sponsors our Yearbook Committee who diligently work on a book of photos and expressions that help preserve our cherished memories of the year.
During the summer, Mrs. Leslie Faulk sponsors our Science Camp, Mrs. Terri Gore sponsors our Art Camp, Coach Jami Hinson sponsors our Soccer Camp, and we also have a Summer Reading Program and a Summer Math and Science Extra Credit Program.
Waccamaw Academy boasts a strong athletics program as well. Offered in middle school and high school are boys' and girls' soccer, girls' volleyball, girls' tennis, boys' and girls' basketball, weight training, baseball, and cheerleading. Our coaches are Mr. Jami Hinson, Ms. Joanna Currie, Mr. Andy Watts, Mr. Dennis Williamson (AD), Mr. Winfred Johnson, and Mrs. Paige Graham. Several parents coach and volunteer their time in other ways. Some years the Academy also offers softball, golf, and dance team. Younger children experience a top-notch physical education program under Mrs. Mindi Lux, and young girls can participate in the Pep Squad under Miss Amy Jones.
